Part-Time Aquarist and Educator, Marine Exploration Center St. Petersburg FL

Marine Exploration Center of St. Petersburg, FL (MECSP) seeks a part-time aquarist to support maintenance and education operations at Rumfish Grill of St. Pete Beach, FL. MECSP conducts guest programs for Rumfish Grill, including guest snorkel programs and behind-the-scenes tours of aquarium operations, while also maintaining several marine aquaria up to 33,500 gallons.

Ideal applicants have experience both in the maintenance of marine aquarium systems, and leading educational programming for varied age groups. Knowledge of Florida marine and estuarine habitats, marine invertebrate husbandry, and Florida marine fauna is desirable. Candidates are expected to work independently and be capable of the physical demands of the position (diving and cleaning aquaria, unloading salt shipments, etc). Position responsibilities include but are not limited to: maintenance diving, record keeping, exhibit cleaning, filtration maintenance, assisting with quarantine and fish disease identification, water quality testing, diet preparation and feeding, volunteer supervision, and leading guest tours.

Applicants must meet the following qualifications in order to be considered:

• Scuba certified, or currently enrolled in a certification program.

• Must be able to work on a team, as well as function individually with no supervision.

• Should understand the fundamentals of aquarium filtration, and be able to identify issues that require attention as they develop.

• Must demonstrate a proficiency in public speaking and guest interaction.

• Ability to bend, lift, crouch, and otherwise perform a variety of physical maintenance tasks in a wide range of positions and conditions.

• Ability to lift and carry 50lbs
